In this article I have put a list together of all the foods that start with the letter A.

I have broken this article into sections. First is fruits that start with A, then vegetables and herbs, followed by desserts, snacks, and other miscellaneous foods. Lastly, I have listed meat foods that start with A.

Fruits Foods That Start with A:

The Acai berry derives from the Acai Palm Tree which is found in South American rainforests. Acai berries are similar to grapes and are rich in fiber and antioxidants; they are said to have an earthy taste.

Native to Japan, the Amanastu is an orange citrus fruit similar in size to a grapefruit. It is typically eaten fresh and when peeled contains 12 slightly sour, slightly bitter pulpy segments.


Apples are tree plants that have more than 7,000 known varieties. This sometimes sweet and sometimes sour fruit is nutritious, containing antioxidants, vitamins, and dietary fiber.


The apricot is a fruit born of the apricot tree; with its fuzzy, orange skin, it resembles a small peach. Apricots are sweet and fleshy, but not very juicy.

Avocados are bright green fruit that is technically considered berries. They are versatile in that they can be prepared in a myriad of ways and are loaded with healthy fats and nutrients.

Asian Pear

Asian pears are another food starting with a that is closely related to European pears (the common variety that you probably buy from your local grocer). They are crisp, juicy, and sweet and can be eaten peeled or unpeeled.

Akebia fruit

Akebia fruit is native to China and is a sweet fleshy fruit that is packed full of small seeds. The taste of akebia fruit is said to be a cross between banana, passion fruit, and lychee.

Ackee fruit

Native to West Africa, the ackee is a creamy-textured fruit and its taste is reminiscent of hearts of palm. A fun fact about Ackee is that it’s illegal in some parts of the world because certain parts of it are poisonous.

Alfalfa Sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts are a nutrient-rich vegetable that is high in vitamin K. Alfalfa sprouts, although mild in flavor, with a hint of nuttiness, add a great bit of texture to any dish.

Acorn Squash

Acorn squash is a close relative of zucchini and summer squashes. Its hard, dry flesh is wonderfully nutty, yet mild. Culinarily speaking, acorn squash can pair well with a multitude of flavors and seasonings.


Like other green, leafy vegetables, Asparagus are rich in vitamin K, protein, fiber, and potassium. Asparagus is a nutritious vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked and has an earthy taste that pairs well with many flavors.

Native to the Mediterranean, artichokes have a delicious meaty center surrounded by flower petals. Artichokes have a nutty flavor and are packed with folate and vitamins C and K. They must be cooked to eat.

Arugula is a leafy green vegetable that looks a bit like lettuce. Its peppery flavor and crunchy leaves add a great bit of texture and lots of flavor to sandwiches, mixed in with salad greens, or many other ways. A fun fact is that arugula has medicinal and aphrodisiacal properties.


Amaranth is native to Central and South America and although it’s a vegetable, high in protein, it is often used as a grain. The leaves of amaranth are used like lettuce leaves, so they can be added to salads and sandwiches and the seeds can be cooked and added to cereals, salads, or fruit.

Aniseed, which is better known as anise, are seeds cultivated in the Middle East that are typically used as a spice. It has a dynamic, licorice flavor similar to fennel that is both sweet and spicy.


Aubergine is the French word for what Americans know as eggplants. Aubergine is a purple, Old World plant that is beloved around the world. Aubergine is typically eaten cooked but can be eaten raw too. They taste similar to zucchini and have a dry, fleshy pulp.

All-Bran is a high-fiber cereal introduced by Kellogg in 1916. This wholesome breakfast or snack cereal is super crunchy and highly nutritious. Currently, it’s available in three varieties and can be eaten both with milk or dry.

Angel Delight

Angel Delight is a powdered product native to the United Kingdom. It is typically whipped with milk to create a light and sweet, fluffy mousse. Angel Delight is currently available in five varieties and is typically used as a topping to other sweet treats like fruit or cakes.

Angel Cake

Angel cake, also known as angel food cake, is a bright-white type of sponge cake. It’s considered a healthier alternative to other cakes because it does not contain butter. When baked, angel cake is light and airy and is usually served as a dessert with berries and/or whipped cream.


Although almonds are commonly recognized as a nut, they are a seed. Although the almond tree is native to Iran, it is now cultivated worldwide. High in protein, almonds are a delicious snack by themselves but are often used in cooking as well. Almonds are dry and have a nutty, sometimes bitter taste.

One of my favorite foods that begin with the letter A is the apple strudel. A strudel is a layered, puff pastry typically filled with a fruit filling, baked, and iced. Apple strudel is commonly filled with an apple, cinnamon, and raisin filling. They are sweet and flaky and usually served as a dessert.

Apple Pie

An apple pie is a dessert that originated in England, although now it’s very Americana. It is a double-crusted pie that is filled with a sweet and cinnamony filling. It’s best served warm with a scoop of ice cream and a dollop of whipped cream.

Aero is an airy chocolate bar produced by Nestle; it comes in many varieties including milk chocolate and white chocolate. The airy bubbles within this candy bar give it a much lighter taste than a solid chocolate bar.

Almond butter

Almond butter is a popular nutty spread made from ground almonds. It’s high in protein and contains less saturated fat than the more popular peanut butter. In recent history, almond butter has become a common substitute for peanut butter.

Arrowroot Cookies

Arrowroot is a starch derived from tropical plants and is highly nutritious. From this starch, arrowroot cookies are made into tasty, crunchy biscuits. Often eaten as a snack, they are more healthy than flour-based cookies.


Ashura is a Turkish dessert similar to pudding or porridge. Ashura is made from fruits (fresh and dried), grains, and nuts. The ingredients are sweetened with sugar and juices and are all boiled in the same pot. There are many variations of Ashura which are both sweet and savory. A fun fact about Ashura is that it’s also referred to as Noah’s Ark Pudding and is said to be the oldest dessert in the world.


Applesauce is a smooth and saucy food that is made from sweetened and/or spiced pureed apples. It can be made from any variety of apples and is a sweet treat or side dish, served chilled in many American homes.


Asopao is a traditional Peurto Rican stew whose main ingredient is chicken. Asopao is simmered in a pot with root vegetables and seasonings, it is traditionally served hot over rice. Asopao is a great dish to warm you up on a cold day.

Alphabet Soup

Alphabet soup is made of alphabet-shaped pasta and customarily has a chicken or tomato-based broth. A favorite of American children and adults, alphabet soup is warm, hearty, and packed with vegetables.


Depending on what part of the world you ask, Adobo is a sauce, seasoning, or style of cooking. However, no matter who you ask, adobo is a flavorful composition of vinegar, salt, garlic, oregano, and other seasonings. Typically adobo is used to marinate meats.

Abgoosht hails from Persia and is a one-pot comfort food similar to a stew. The literal translation of Abgoosht is “meat water”. This hearty dish is packed with meats, vegetables, and beans and is highly nutritious.

Anchovies are an oily fish, small in size, that are typically found in the Mediterranean. They have a very salty, fishy taste and are typically cooked to add flavor instead of being eaten alone. It’s common to make anchovies into a paste that can be cooked with.

Angus Beef

Angus beef is a type of beef that has high marbling and lots of flavors. It is more juicy, tender, and flavorful than regular beef. Angus is usually graded better by the USDA than other kinds of beef.

Albacore Tuna

Albacore tuna is a white, longtail fish that is typically found in warmer oceans. Texturally, Albacore tuna is firm; it has a milder, less fishy taste than other varieties of tuna.

Ahi Tuna

Ahi is a yellowfin, sushi-grade tuna which means it can be safely prepared and consumed raw. Ahi tuna has a firm, meaty texture with a mild flavor.

Andouille Sausage

Andouille Sausage is a smoked pork sausage that originated in France. In America, Andouille sausage is commonly associated with Cajun cooking.

Antelope Meat

Antelope meat is mild meat similar to venison. Its texture is similar to veal while its flavor is sagey. Notably, antelope has far fewer calories per serving than beef.
