Balance is vital to living a healthy life and having a good state of mind, and that remains true when it comes to the pH levels of the body. But what is pH?
Acidity vs. Alkalinity
The pH measures the concentration of the hydrogen ion in a liquid and works with a scale that goes from 1 to 14. Pure water has a pH of 7. A pH below 7 is considered acidic, a pH of seven is neutral, and anything above is considered basic or alkaline.
The ideal pH for our bodies is slightly alkaline; specifically 7.30 to 7.45. To measure your body’s pH level, you can dip a piece of litmus paper in your saliva or urine as soon as you wake up, before eating or drinking anything.
Maintaining a healthier pH means you need to know how to alkalize your body and bring down the acidity in it. Mainly this is because when our bodies are too acidic, it becomes a health hazard to us.
Alkalinity means there’s more oxygen present in your body. Interestingly, most diseases cannot manifest in an alkaline environment.
What May Cause Acidity in your Body?
To a large extent, acidity in the body is caused by the foods that we take. Surprisingly, our state of mind also affects our body pH levels significantly; stress causes body acidity.
When the body’s acidic levels are high, the body will not repair damaged cells and detoxify heavy metals leaving our cells and body organs are at risk of failing. Some of the signs that your acidic levels are high could be fatigue, joint pain, irritability, and brain fog. How then can you maintain your body alkalinity? Let us examine 8 ways on how to alkalize the body. Here we go..
How to Alkalize Your Body In 8 Steps
1. Drink Lots and Lots of Water
Doctors recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces every day to keep your body well hydrated and body systems well regulated. Why not carry a water bottle with you wherever you go (and definitely not a BPA plastic bottle) and refill it all day? Adequate intake of water will not only supply oxygen into your body but also clear out excess toxins.
To make this endeavor even more meaningful, add some lemon to your water. Lemon is acidic, right? No! You may be surprised to learn that lemon water is highly alkaline and contains Vitamin C which aids digestion.
2. Befriend Water-rich Foods
Foods rich in water can supplement your hydration needs. Hence, eat plenty of fruits and veggies like cucumbers, romaine lettuce, and melon. These will help to dilute the acidity in your body, keeping you hydrated. And, similar to water, they will flush out toxins.
Equally, coconut water replenishes vital minerals and alkalizes the body.
3. Breathe Deeply
This is an important tip that helps with some ailments. Be sure to use your diaphragm and abdominal muscles to inhale and exhale fully.
Remember, the whole point of alkalizing is ensuring that you introduce more oxygen into your body. So when you breathe shallowly, some carbon dioxide remains trapped in the lungs and eventually gets converted into acid.
On the other hand, breathing deeply and consciously will remove carbon dioxide from the body and bring in the much-needed oxygen. A helpful tip here is trying as often as you can to count up to 4 while inhaling and the same count when exhaling.
4. Go for Organic Foods
Organic foods have also been shown to contain higher nutritional content as compared to non-organic foods, which will help ensure your body gets the minerals it needs to neutralize acid wastes. When we eat alkaline foods, our blood takes in more oxygen.
This doesn’t mean that we should only partake of organic, alkalizing foods. Nutritionists advise opting for a balance of 80% alkaline-forming food and 20% acidic-forming food. The important thing is to remember to keep acid-forming foods to a minimum.
5. Stay Away from Junk & Processed Foods
Naturally, we find ourselves craving the appetizing, palatable and more acidic foods such as sugar, fries, burgers, caffeine, junk food, processed foods, dairy products, and glutinous grains.
The key is moderation, not a total blackout. Every so often, take a break from processed foods (meat included) to let your body alkalize. You know, the process of digesting meat, eggs, dairy products, grains, and fish causes acid residue to form. That is why occasional abstinence is a brilliant idea.
6. Avoid Pesticides, Chemicals and Other Contaminants
Some of the foods and fruits we buy may be tainted with harmful chemicals that are used on the crop, such as fertilizer. Unfortunately, not all chemicals dissipate by harvest time, and this poses a danger to consumers.
The problem with these harmful substances is that they diminish the alkalizing potential of all foods. Thus we lose all the benefits of consuming alkaline foods.
7. Learn to Relax and Avoid Stress
Researchers say that stress, fatigue, and negative emotions have the potential to manifest themselves physically in the body as acidity. Such mental dispositions as competitiveness, judging others, unwillingness to forgive, resentment, depression, self-criticism, are all aggravating to the body.
Given how strong the influence of the mind can be on the body, it’s important to work on your mindset and avoid stress-causing attitudes. This is crucial to neutralizing body acidity.
Other stress-relieving activities such as exercises, jogging, and massages can have profound alkalizing effects on the mind and, in turn, the body.
8. Limit Consumption of Alcohol
Most alcoholic beverages have high sugar content and are highly acidic. Still, you don’t have to cut it out altogether, no! As mentioned earlier, moderation is the way to go. An occasional beer or glass of wine and not in excess will have other nutritional benefits to the body.
On this one, we can add that smoking tobacco is very harmful to the body. This is because it inhibits the intake of oxygen, thus making it more acidic.
Be Determined to Get Your pH Alkalized!
An optimum pH balance is vital for good health and hence day in and day out, your body is hard at work maintaining a slightly alkaline environment. Billions of cells in your tissues and organs need an alkaline environment to function properly, prevent damage to the cells and fight off pathogenic microbes.
Now that you know how to alkalize your body, be determined and disciplined to maintain an alkaline lifestyle.
As considered, the benefits are immense of maintaining a healthy, alkaline lifestyle. Not only will you experience noticeable differences in your sleep, mental alertness and energy levels, you will also experience benefits such as improved cardiovascular, tissue and bone health, enhanced cell functioning, as well as the mitigation of chronic diseases.
Before you go I added this video from Youtube as it highlights the importance of keeping your body in an alkalized state.
